What factors led to the establishment of O'right?

  • +

O'right was founded for two reasons. First, the company sought to create products out of recycled materials. After innovations of new products began to pop out, the company started to take the innovations as their foundation, giving them the opportunity to step out towards their goal.

The second reason is because of the founder of O'right, Steven Ko. As a young teenager, Steven’s mother passed away because of cancer. Steven could not forget how painful it is, to watch his mother die of an incurable disease caused by manmade pollutants. Inspired by the pain, Steven decided to establish the O'right Company, to make healthy and Eco-friendly products, to prevent any more people from dying for the same cause as his mother.

What motivated O'right to promote environmental protection?

  • +

O'right focuses on preserving nature and environmental protection. What motivated the company to start environmental programs? The vice CEO of O’right answered, "People all over the world are facing environmental destruction and global warming. We have already taken too much from Mother Earth, and it’s time for us to give back what was taken. O' right was established with this motivation to repay the earth, with three major goals for our products. First, they should be good for the human body. Secondly, their ingredients should come from nature. Lastly, they should be healthy and eco-friendly."

O’right originally wanted to find something to return to the earth from their products. After long sessions of research and discussion, the staff decided they could make use of empty bottles, which are discarded after use, and began the design from there. The company used a specialized fragile material to synthesize the bottom of the bottle. When planted in dirt, the seed will sprout and break through the material, growing into a whole new tree. This way, we can return something we took away from Mother Earth, and save a part of the environment we live in.

What is the inspiration behind the Tree in the Bottle, and why?

Among continents, European countries accounted for the highest dollar value worth of O'right exports in 2014, aside from sales in Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong. In Europe, O'right's works and products are likely most popular in Austria and the Nordic Countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden). These countries, like many others in Europe, promote the use of renewable energy resources through national policies. In 2014, O'right had the honor to take part in Cosmoprof WorldWide Bologna, the world’s leading exhibition of the cosmetics industry. O'right's innovative Recoffee series amazed European visitors, many of whom praised O'right to be the most outstanding brand of 2014's exhibition.

In what countries are O'right's works and products most popular in, other than Taiwan?

O’right's conception of environmental friendly products is very simple. The company has only one goal, that is to create products that are good for human health and nature, and these specialized products are all extended from this goal. Take the "Tree in a Bottle" for example. The concept of the product is to return resources to nature; hence, the company conceived the idea of putting the seed of a tree in the shampoo bottle, which, when buried after use, will decompose and nurture the seed to grow. Each and every design is centered on environmental protection. These ideas are derived from the efforts of every employee, who bears the importance of protecting the earth in mind.

How does O'right research and develop ideas for green products?

Apart from the development of haircare technology, O’right encourages employees to participate in public welfare, where they would find inspiration to organize series of environmental protection events. Of these events, Earth Hour 60+ is the most well-known, an activity supported by people all around the globe. Its main goal is to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions by calling for people to turn off the lights for one hour at the same time every year, inspiring millions across the world to take actions to protect our planet. O’right has become the chief organizer of Earth Hour 60+ in Taiwan.

Are there any other products that O'right want to work on other than the current products?

Plastics are a predominant material of today's world economy. Yet, only 14% of all plastic packaging is recycled after use, and large quantities escape into natural environments, which not only results in a loss of billions of dollars per year but causes permanent damage to the ecosystem as well. The overuse of plastic packaging has become a worldwide issue. In 2018, O'right plans to manufacture all plastic packaging using 100% Recycled HDPE plastic, which is upcycled from used milk bottles. The upcycling process releases ¼ the amount of carbon emissions released by plastic production. As CEO Steven Ko points out, this change will bring new life to the product as well as the company.

What does O'right believe the haircare industry has to improve on?

1

How did O'right evolve from a distribution agent for foreign brands to a private brand?

O'right started as an agent for cosmetics products of various foreign brands, since funding was insufficient and very few had heard of O'right. In order to gain international recognition, O'right supported other companies and took opportunities to design its own products, winning many awards and boosting the confidence of its employees. O'right was finally able to become an independent brand and release the first batch of hair care products under its name. "Starting a company was not an easy task, but once we succeeded, the feeling of fulfillment was twice as much as we expected," the vice CEO of O'right said. "It’s always hard to try something new, but as long as we take the first step, we are one step closer to our goal. This is what every member of O'right believes in, and it is the key to O'right's success today."

2

What problems occurred during the operation of the newly established company and how were the problems solved?

In its early days, O'right struggled to find a place in the haircare industry for lack of funding and publicity. Afterwards, having received third-party certification, the company gradually gained popularity. O'right hopes to attract customers through word-of-mouth advertising instead of actual commercials, a distinctive marketing method which helped the company out of its financial slump. Customer preferences remained the final problem. O'right has been trying to create products that were, first and foremost, eco-friendly, but customer preferences are another important aspect to consider. If the product does not meet the customer’s needs, all earlier efforts will go to waste. O'right incorporates innovative designs with its green ideals, so customers are constantly updated with new advancements that would maintain their interest in the brand.

3

What kind of achievement does the company expect?

Working in the haircare industry does not offer tremendous accomplishment, but all the same, it affects people around the world. O'right finds most fulfillment in positive feedback from customers. The vice CEO of O'right says, "Helping others is our key to happiness, and so is protecting Mother Earth. If we do both to the best of our ability, it will be the greatest source of our fulfillment." For this belief, O'right has earned good repute both in Taiwan and overseas.

People everywhere are facing all kinds of environmental issues, and they work to protect their homes by minimizing pollution. O'right is doing the same, starting from the small things such as reusing and recycling, designing eco-friendly products, participating in environmental-awareness activities, et cetera. These efforts are not just about protecting the earth alone, but also giving Taiwan a chance to enter the World Health Organization, changing the world's view of what Taiwanese people are capable of.
