“Book House 60” was originated from a place where children can study and eat, this is also a second place for juvenile delinquents to learn skills. Juvenile delinquents are teenagers who participate unlawful participants. Family’s lack of moral and social guidance is the main factor of causing juvenile delinquency, especially for single-parenting families, orphans, intergenerational education, high-risk families, etc.  Furthermore, poor school attendance or writing or reading disabilities may also lead to delinquency. In Book House 60, volunteers from the Xiangxiang Social Service Association guide them back on the right track by helping them to learn a second skill and living abilities. The job mainly trains the teenagers to bake coffee beans.

At first, many residents that live inside the neighborhood were laughing at themselves that they are living inside Taipei city’s slum. Hence, Mr. Fang, Carrefour Foundation and Yuxiang Social Service Association, together created Book House 60 and built new factiiles around the Southern airport. The “Loho Paradise” serves a space where elders can socialize, share meals, and join activities; kids can have a place to finish their homework and external studies. The Loho Paradise set up coffee-making courses for juvenile delinquents helping them to earn a living and develop skills.

The Origin of Book House 60

Management philosophy:

The juvenile delinquents’ determination and passion was the main reason of Book House 60’s establishment. Mr. Fang and the founders of the cafe promised if they could pass the exam for coffee art, Mr Fang will open a brand new cafe for them to enhance their skills. And there is a special thing about this cafe: the main source of ingredients is from Carrefour Food Recycle Plan, using vegetables and fruits that has flaws on appearance but still edible. Mr. Fang hopes the restaurant can reduce food waste, providing another path for the ugly ingredients.

Outside of the cafe, Mr. Fang set up a “sharing fridge.”  Hoping to popularize the concept of food sharing, he wants to change the unbalance distribution of food source in society. Moreover, his goal is to reduce food waste and protect the environment.

“60” is the name of a stray cat that accidentally fell from height, causing paralysis to its lower body. However, due to the help by Hesheng Fang and enthusiastic neighbors in the community, the cat can crawl slowly, becoming a popular pet in the store. On the other hand, “60” also represent 60 years old, which in other words, elders. These elders usually refers to the elders who often help to take care of children in the store. This is how the store name, Book House 60, came from.

With the recent receive of various ingredients, the store updates weekly menu on Facebook. It use up the ingredients wisely, and meanwhile, achieving the goal of advertising. The plan makes public acknowledge the effort that Book House 60 has on the Food Sharing Program and continues to promote the plan to the entire country.

In 1966, Carrefour Culture and Education Foundation, founded by Europe's No. 1 and the world's second largest retail group "Carrefour" corporation, aims to promote culture and art, education, charities, sports development and other charitable activities. The foundation wishes for a long-standing culture to take root. From the moment when the Carrefour Culture and Education Foundation were established, Carrefour had adhered to the mission of “Creating a happy and joyful family.”

Mission concept:

Carrefour has held artistic shows and funded various Taiwan art organizations such as Yunmen Dance, Minghua Garden, If Children Theatre, Ten Drums Orchestra, Jiu Tian Folk Ark Troupe, Youren God Drum, Collecting Winds, AM creative, Our Theatre, Zhu Zongqing Percussion Orchestra, and Cellist Zhang Zhengjie. They hope to raise the creativity and international competitiveness of Taiwan, meanwhile preserving the national culture. Carrefour corporation wants to promote the other perspective of international art and enlarge public’s mind, developing understanding among different races and cultures.

Art Promotion:

Carrefour wants to take the chance to make people think outside the box. ;they don’t want people to focus all on school work, but focus more on family and social education instead. At the same time, they will make educational program, such as hosting the Children Art Competition to encourage children to express their creativity. They also keep track of children in poor households and provide help.

Educational development:

Over the past decades, the Carrefour Culture and Education Foundation has always provided the positive support to socially disadvantaged groups. The foundation has also continued to embrace the spirit of helping as others as helping self, and try the greatest effort to help the society. The Carrefour Culture and Education Foundation had proposed various kinds of society promotion, for example: Food Donating Plan, Marginal Community Development Plan, and Changes Donation Plan, etc., publicize the help, so more people can join the plan and help.

Social care:

According to research data, 3.75 million ton of food were wasted in Taiwan each year. And 650,000 of underprivileged minority cannot afford for their daily meals. As a result, Carrefour promoted a program on Foodbanking Organization in 2014, and implement their Food Sharing Plan in 2016. Throughout this program, everyone can donate supplies that are superfluous, but are still usable to the Foodbanking Organization, and delivered them to people who need it. There are many small Foodbanking Organization been set up recently, where many foundations are working together with them, in order to encourage more programmes that are similar. Now, transnational company join Carrefour and their Food Sharing Plan, hopes that they can encourage more people to care about the topic of wasted food.

Carrefour's food sharing plan is mainly about donating goods that are not ugly or have incomplete packaging, but still edible, and send them to organizations like the Yu Xiang Social Service Association so they can help people in need. Through processes like this, they believe it can also reduce food waste and share food to various places and families.

Through Carrefour's Food Bank, a number of similar projects have been started, including "Food Collection and Donation", "Promoting Healthy Eating", "Assisting Private Food Banks" and "Permanent Agriculture" and other social caring projects. All these projects are started to help those people in need, and to ensure that food is not wasted.

According to Huang Yijun, the director of the Carrefour Cultural and Cultural Foundation, Taiwan’s Carrefour has introduced the French national music and other food companies, and has an internal audit process with long-term cooperation with the leftovers and establishment of review standards, such as food quality identification, logistics and equipment requirements. The new ingredients that meet the standards will be donated to the cooperative food bank organization under strict control, and will spread love to every corner of the society.

At present, the concept of "continued food" has slowly become popular around the world. Not long ago, Italy also had a similar donation of food, donated the surplus food to charity, and also prohibited legislation to waste food and encourage the reuse of food that is still edible; on the other side of the globe, India A restaurant owner also set up a love refrigerator, hoping to donate mainly, and does not want people to spend money to help the disadvantaged groups; now there is a wave of sharing food around the world, we realize that food is still edible, Most of them have entered the garbage dump before they have been used. People who live in the comfort circle ignore the vulnerable families who are trapped in life. They are constantly wasting food and become a habit. The food that can be used is wasted in vain. At the same time, many national exhibitions in Europe have also provoked many actions against the leftovers. People decided to start redefining the foods that sell poorly. They carefully thought about how we should use them to reduce the waste of food and do the best for the environment.
