Waste to Wonder:
 Rejunvenating Agricultural Waste

Motivation

In recent years, environmental protection has been one of the most widely discussed topics around Taiwan, from animal protection to reducing waste. Among all issues, plastic waste poses the greatest threat and brings the worst impact. Plastic waste is placed in landfills. The toxic substances pollute oceans and the soil under them and choke animals who have mistakenly eaten plastic. When humans consume these fish, they eat and digest all the microplastics the fish consume, eventually harming human health. The source of all the plastic waste is manufacturing. Nowadays, almost all items in our daily lives are made from plastic since they're cheap and durable. After discovering this problem, our team hopes to raise awareness of sustainable production to avoid plastic waste's catastrophic impacts on our society and environment. Through Taiwan's businesses and social campaigns, this issue can be solved by a change in all manufacturing companies. Our research revolves around the topic of eco-friendly homewares produced with agricultural waste, aiming to reduce the usage of plastics in manufacturing, and eventually minimize the impacts plastic can bring to Taiwan.

Meet Our Team

There are ten junior high students in our team, aged from 13 to 14 years old. Since some of us have comparably less experience in project research, it was a slightly strenuous task to select a suitable topic at first. Through teamwork and practice, fortunately, we have advanced the skills necessary for the project over time. When brainstorming about our project ideas, some mentioned how homewares are necessary. This incited us to conduct research and come to a consensus on our project’s focus—rejuvenating agricultural waste. We have discovered a company that specializes in making furniture from waste created through agriculture, thereby allowing us to dive deeper into the production of recycled items and sustainable development in Taiwan.
