Project Overview

Description of Our Community

Taiwan is a Pacific island with beautiful mountains and rivers. Due to its special geographical location, the junction of the adjacent Philippine Sea plate and the Eurasian plate, Taiwan is an island full of mountains. Especially Xindian Mountain, where our school is located, the mountain let students deeply appreciate the beauty of nature. From the provision of the daily needs of the aborigines until becoming the occupation of many countries, the mountains contain rich resources. After the industrial development, wood became a major export commodity, boosting Taiwan's economy. Now, the mountains provide a place for people to rest during free time, an activity for people to self-challenge. The students in our school have a sufficient understanding of the mountains. The combination of diverse courses and local education has stimulated our curiosity to understand the mountains. Therefore, we hope to help more people understand the mountains of Taiwan through this CyberFair project.

Summary of Our Project

The current 108 syllabus of Taiwan education promotes the school-based curriculum and cross-disciplinary activities. Unlike traditional courses, schools have to combine a variety of courses, promote cross-disciplinary education, and let students learn through experiences. Elite activities are a major curriculum indicator of KCIS. The KC elite activities are designed based on mountains and lakes of Taiwan, the best-known activity is hiking. Kang Chiao students have to climb Snow Mountain of Taiwan (3886m) when they are in 6th grade and climb the Hehuan Mountains (3000m above) in 8th grade. The activities combine humanities and sports, and use actual activities and personal experience to educate students the three "ㄐ ㄧ ㄥ ˋ" - clean, quiet and respectful. Since our team has all experienced mountaineering training, the team decided to promote mountaineering-related knowledge. Through Dr. Wang Shihao's knowledge and experience of the mountains, we will discuss how to enjoy the beauty of the mountains without having to worry about the potential crisis of mountain climbing.

 Our Computer and Internet Access

KCIS Junior Team teammates used the 100 megabytes local network and server provided by the school to complete the CyberFair project. Since we do not have enough time in class, most works are done at home. In this case, we use “Line” and “Google Hangouts” to communicate with each other. In addition, the team chose to use Google Docs and Google Drive to document data and files because it has the “Share” function. Another reason we chose to use Google Drive is that the school account does not limit the storage of our drives, which is very convenient.

Our Project Sound Bite

In this Cyberfair project, the team researched Dr. Wang, including his background story, his motivation, his job and career, and his goals. Through the interview of Dr. Wang and the questionnaire, the members of the team collected credible data to include in the website created.

How did your activities and research for this International Schools CyberFair project support content standards, required coursework and curriculum requirements?

The CyberFair project addresses the knowledge of mountain climbing safety, related to our school’s elite program, mountain climbing  (Xue Mountain, Hehuan Mountain). The students learned about the knowledge of creating a website, putting together an interview, and working together as a team to be more efficient and to urge each other to produce the most out of each person. The team used the internet to research online for information to help them better understand details about the project. In addition, the members found the importance of being aware of our social and environmental issues. With the help of the Internet, contacting each member of the team became faster and easier, benefiting all students to be able to finish the project even during winter vacation.

Problems We Had To Overcome

Since most of our teammates are participating for the first time in this competition, we are not quite familiar with the game. Therefore, after our discussions, two teammates that have experience became the leaders of the team, however, various problems were encountered during the process. The team's division of labor was uneven, and with the encouragement and coordination of the teacher, it improved slightly. Later, with the guidance of the teachers, we were able to better organize our work and produce better work. Our team not only encountered problems in teamwork but also faced bottlenecks in individual work of website creation, questionnaire analysis, and video production. The person in charge of website installation has no experience in setting up a website. The progress starts from zero, taking him months to finalize the website. The questionnaire analysis was also troublesome because some respondents submitted invalid data, causing difficulties in creating the charts of the data. When creating the video of the interview of Dr. Wang, he spoke too fast, which caused some words to be vague. Therefore, the student in charge of editing and submitting the video took three weeks to edit and add in subtitles. The difficulties and hardships during the competition, although they brought great challenges to the team members, cultivated a tacit team and a strong bond between each team member.
