The main reason that sports aren’t popular in Taiwan is that traditional Taiwanese considered sports “unnecessary” and “useless”, so very little parents allowed their kids to participate in sports. As a result, sports have very little value to the government and people, making Taiwan lack a complete system of sports, including training for kids or retirement insurance for retired athletes. This created a vicious cycle that heavily impacted the sports industry in Taiwan. Students that focus on sports are at a disadvantage in the sense of education since the traditional Taiwan graduating system relies on tests but not talent. Choxue, founded by Kai-Cheng Ho, a Chinese American, is an organization specialized in mediating sports students in high school or college to guarantee their graduation, therefore encouraging sports among civilians and eliminating misunderstandings and prejudice against sports.
Choxue is an educational organization, mainly purposed for students in Taiwan, especially sports students, for example, people in the school basketball team. Since sports student spends most of their time on training instead of learning, this would cause many disadvantages for them in terms of graduating, which will further influence the parents not to support sports. With the Choxue organization, the students who are talented in games can shine brightly as well.
Cheng Ho, the founder and CEO of Choxue, was adopted to America at 13 years old. A stranger to English who never give up and ended up at Harvard University. After graduation, he gave up high-paying financial jobs and chose to return to his home country Taiwan, founded Choxue, and decided to change the whole Asian educational system.
America takes sports as a part of education to raise leaders; 90 % of business CEOs came out from School Sports teams. However, Taiwan, or even the whole of Asia, separated sports and education to focus on scores only. Choxue’s objective is to change the extreme values in education. We provide students in Preparatory schools more chances to interact with sports and let them understand the benefits of games. Every sports match directed by Choxue is recorded and live on their internet platform. The team has easy access to “Choxue streaming and data record software” to preserve video data and analyze them for the coaches and students to improve.
While we are doing this project, we use our school time and spare time. At school, we discuss the topic, write down web content, using laptops to record, and search for information. For the convenience of organizing and correction, all of the materials and pictures are uploaded to google drive. We open shared google docs so that all the teammates can work online to discuss and modify; also, the school provides us the internet. Therefore we can quickly record the content and search for information more efficiently.
Although we are all 9th graders, we often couldn’t meet and discuss our project together. Apart from not being able to attend, everyone has limited time. We receive not only pressure from homework and tests, but also after-school activities to take into account too. Therefore, all of us sacrificed much of our time to finish this project. Through this project, we learned the importance of time management, everyone has the same amount of time, but the real difficulty is how you effectively arrange them.
Everyone has a different style or logic ideas in terms of writing the content; a paragraph was written might not be accepted by another teammate. So, when we ran out of ideas, we would ask for suggestions from our teachers, discuss the central direction, and then begin writing. At the same time, before writing anything, we would consider our ideas with our teammates, listen to others’ ideas, and then unify to form a completed data. That way, not only will we get different approaches, the content would also be more resourceful.
This project research requires interviews with characters outside of the school; therefore, we have to set the time and locations for the respondent to prepare. Meanwhile, we have to form the questions; furthermore, we also need to ensure the questions are clear with reasoning. Otherwise, it would waste the precious interview, and also can't help our research.
We use Google docs to write all of our project content, this software is commonly used between students in our school, so there’s not much problem in that. However, things aren’t going well when making the website. We used Adobe Dreamweaver to make our website; it is an application that we aren’t very familiar with. On top of that, the photos we used all need to be processed, for example, coloring, graphing, or photoshopping.
Through this project, we learned that collaboration is an essential element when doing anything; this could be separated into three factors. First of all, trust is one of the factors; a trustworthy bond must be created and maintained for us to complete our own designated part. The objective is another factor, in a team, there must be at least one clear objective for everyone to achieve. Meanwhile, everyone must have their part and understand their mission clearly to execute it surely. Lastly, a discussion is perhaps as important as trust is. During the project, we all got our ideas of how things should be, and they inevitably will be different. It isn’t necessary to accept others’ ideas, but you must respect each other through a constructive discussion.
Through this project and interview of the founder of “Choxue”, our visions were no longer limited by the engraved impressions of Taiwanese education after listening to their stories of sports students’ difficulties. This project showed us those sports students that aren’t accepted by most people can still follow their dreams, and also showed us that when a person truly wanted to change something, he could give up everything.
