Reviving Oceans : Marine Recycling

We excavate the company of our project by applying both interviews and investigating related research in the social studies field. Our main objective was to discuss it with certain individuals related to our project. During the interview, we gathered primary information and used it, along with the research documents to fill in gaps in our project information. To gain a more precise understanding of our targeted audience and their knowledge about our research topic, we applied the use of a questionnaire form of social quantitative research. This required the participants to complete an online questionnaire over 2 weeks, resulting in 351 responses. We analyzed these responses to show and check the results, allowing us to generate more detailed and objective results for our project. Although the questionnaire is useful, it slightly limited the scope of our research. Even so, the form still provided valuable information in our research by giving us a better understanding of society’s basic awareness of the topic. In addition, it helped us to have a better understanding of our data that couldn't be explained through literature analysis and identify any defects in our research.

As you can see from the graph, the majority of people believe that marine pollution is important. Rome wasn't built in a day, and the process of polluting the ocean is faster than people think. First of all, the largest part of marine pollution is caused by the garbage that people make. Ocean pollution is caused by the garbage people throw away every day, and the people and resources needed to clean up the ocean often can't keep up with the rate at which people are polluting the ocean. The variety of life in the ocean is breathtaking, amazing, and we can learn more about different areas through the world of the ocean, and people need to understand and help the pollution of the ocean to effectively protect the ocean. According to the graph, almost all of people believe protecting marine from pollution is crucial, which means people pay attention to this issue, this might benefit the government and charity teams when they establish activities or policies, and more people might attend to solve this problem.

According to 351 responses, the bar chart shows that 73.5% of people determine the effect of marine pollution is serious; in contrast, 5.5% of people don’t think that marine pollution is a big issue. Ocean pollutants affect the ecology of organisms, damaging the fishing environment, and impacting the growth and reproduction of fish, and aquatic resources. If radioactive waste or heavy metals are dumped into the ocean, they will become a problem for the marine organisms which becomes a threat to consumers that causes chronic diseases. As time passes, ocean pollution becomes a serious problem that people need to act against.

According to 351 responses, respondents believe that the main source of marine pollution comes from plastic and garbage discharge which represents 95.2%, and industrial wastewater discharge represents the second highest which is 87.5%. Moreover, the other reasons that were chosen above 40% include marine transportation, e.g., ship emissions and accidents (55.8%), oil and chemical spills(71.2%), and agricultural pollution, e.g., pesticides and fertilizers (44.2%).

There is no absolute answer to this question, but the answer ‘Eating more crabs’ is wrong. From the responses, we notice that 87.5% of people chose ‘reducing the usage of plastic bags’ as the best way to take action to reduce marine pollution. In addition, 68.9% of respondents chose ‘Support the establishment of marine protection regulations’, 67% of respondents chose ‘Promote a more eco-friendly lifestyle’, 61.3% of respondents chose ‘Strictly control industrial and corporate emissions’, 61% of respondents chose ‘Participate in beach cleaning activities’, 54.4% of respondents chose ‘Support environmental organizations and advocacy’, 0.3% of respondents chose ‘Using green energy materials’, and 0.3% of respondents chose ‘Cherish things, recycle and reuse’.

According to 351 responses, only a few people want to learn a better way to reduce carbon emissions. There are a lot of reasons, perhaps it is because modern people feel like carbon emissions have no connection to their lives. As far as their concerns, it is just like an unexploded bomb that had not caught their attention. Although the pollution doesn’t seem to be serious, they still have to know as time passes environmental pollution will become critical.

1. Take multiple modes of transportation (public transportation) instead of driving cars. If people start to use public transportation, the environment will start to improve. In conclusion, we could reduce pollution and carbon emissions.
2. Use recycled products. Examples like reusable shopping bags. These reusable shopping bags could be reused and helpful for the environment. Factories could decrease the amount of producing plastic bags. Reusable bags, paper straws, paper cups, or anything that is paper-made can all be examples of recycled products. This may decrease the amount of waste.
3. Decreasing the usage of plastic bags can help the environment, by doing this it can help to improve the lives of animals and our environment.

From 195 responses, most people have used products like environmental cups, environmental bags, environmental tableware, electric cars, electric motorcycles, and public transportation. These responses have significantly shown the success of the policy of reuses and recycling products, which means the policy the government and the United Nations publish is functioning. On the other hand, nearly no response has mentioned marine waste products or circular economics, in addition, this means the idea of marine conservation and circular economy isn’t well developed.

According to 351 responses, only 5.4% of people participated in carbon footprint reduction training and educational activities, and in contrast, 41.6% of people never attended any related activities. It can be seen that most people in Taiwan are indifferent to issues such as marine pollution. The graph presents the gradual decrease in people who have attended lots of carbon footprint reduction training or activities. Furthermore, the graph shows that most of the people had never participated in carbon reduction activities, these have as shows the problem about the idea isn’t being well presented to the community, carbon footprint is an essential idea that needs to be present to the community, due to it is one of the most important concepts on the development of conserving the environment. Action such as lectures, volunteers, and exhibition action can let more people understand the concept of carbon footprint reduction.

According to 351 responses, 75.2% of respondents deem that the definition of carbon footprint is ‘the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated by an individual or organization in daily life, work, and production’. They knew that CO2 impacts the environment, involving all emissions levels such as individuals, households, businesses, countries, energy use, diet, and transportation. 48.7% of people considered to reflect contributions to climate change and global warming is his definition.

1. Some people think protecting the environment is the definition of recycling. Saving the environment can make the earth's environment more better.
2. Reducing the waste and doing more better job on garbage classification.

From this response, we can observe people in general have some basic understanding of the topic of marine pollution, but they do not know how to solve such problems. Government agencies should come up with this type of policy so that people at large understand how to protect the oceans, not just what the pollution is. Most of the citizens do not understand the actions they can take to solve this problem. Moreover, this will not only raise people's awareness of marine environmental protection but also make a big difference in the amount of marine pollution and solve problems such as marine pollution as soon as possible. To solve this problem, the government should regularly mention the data and actions people should specifically do, due to the need for solutions we keep changing throughout the process of marine conservation.

From the bar graph above, the number of people who care about environmental protection has obviously decreased. 44.2% of respondents aren't aware of protecting the environment, the possible reason that people aren’t aware is because, to them, it was like an unexploded bomb that had not caught their attention. Although environmental protection is not important to these people, they still need to know how important environmental protection is. As can be seen from the chart, most of them are not very familiar with environmental protection, and from grades 1 to 5, it can be seen that 3 accounts for the largest percentage. In other words, people just know that there is such an issue as environmental protection, but they don't understand how to protect it. Although the charts are laid out on a scale of 3 to 5, the public's awareness of environmental protection needs to be strengthened.

According to 351 responses, 90.9% of the respondents agree that environmental protection is important to society, and recycling can have a good impact on the earth's environment and ocean. This also means that people still have an awareness of the ocean. However, there are still 9.1% of people think that recycling can’t have a large impact on society. The data allow us to understand how people view recycling, mostly almost 90% of people believe that recycling benefits the environment, however, if we compare this data to the previous data, people’s awareness of environmental protection, we can understand mostly all of the people what to solve this problem, but the only action they are working on is recycling, showing there is a lot of action people can take in the future to benefit the environment.

According to the bar graph above, 36.5% of people have never used reusable items, in contrast, 14.2% of people have used reusable items before, which means that people need to increase their environmental awareness. As you can see from this chart, more than half of the percent people don't use eco-friendly bags at all, and although we can see in the chart above that people think it's important to be environmentally friendly, people do not understand that the technology advance allows marine pollutes can be transferred to brand new backpack, which means that the idea new of eco-friendly backpack needs much more effort for letting other understand how can it benefit the environment and what’s its advantage. If people spend money on buying this kind of backpack, the problem of marine pollution might become better.

51% of the people don’t have an opinion on the current environmental conservation policies, however, there are still 7.4% of people who don't feel satisfied with the policy the government established. According to data, more than 85% do not believe that government policy benefits marine conservation, from all of our previous data, there is a pattern that can be seen, which is that mostly all of the citizens believe that environmental conservation is a serious case that needs to be focus on, however, they do not actually understand what they can work on. Furthermore, these all show that the government had not focused on specific actions that all citizens could participate in, leading most people to feel unsatisfied with the government policy. The government can work on policies such as establishing activities with charities such as cleaning the beach or other more complicated actions, these might lead people to participate in marine conservation more actively.

1. Recycling is not that complete, it can be improved more.
2. The government hasn't promoted very well and has room for improvement.
3. There are some policies about plastic, however, saving electricity is also a problem that hasn't been solved.

From the free-response questions, most people believe that the government should make significant changes and improve its policies specifically establishing policies about the action of dealing with plastic bottles. These free-response questions all pointed out the government didn’t actually take any action to solve marine pollution, all of their policy had been focused on the cause of marine pollution and kept mentioning about use of fewer plastic bottles and other plastic items, however, this policy can’t actually solve the pollution of marine that has already been damaged.

As you can see from this chart, 80 percent of the people have used carbon emission reduction products, which means that the general public cares about environmental issues, in today's society, many products are also labeled with carbon reduction, which means that this can help the earth's environmental protection. This graph shows another action that people are working on to solve the marine pollution problem, the reduction of carbon emissions also prevents the environment keep getting damaged.

Based on the data, indicates that people do not change their backpacks frequently. 52.7% of respondents used their bags for over three years, while only 3.4% of them used a bag for less than a year. Moreover, the average of changing a backpack between 1 to 2 years is 35.6%. Most of the people who use backpacks will use more than three years, which is helpful for the environment due to the fact that bags are also products that are not environmentally friendly. From the data, we can conclude that Deya’s marine pollutants might be suitable for most people due to they won’t change their backpacks in a short period of time, which ensures that the marine pollutants can be used and benefit the environment because this kind of backpack is long long-lasting.

From the chart above, it shows that people believe marine waste can be used for various purposes, including artworks (70.9%), clothing (61.8%), and protective cases (61.3%). A smaller percentage 46.2% of respondents believed that waste could be used to make water bottles. In reality, there are lots of ways to utilize marine waste, and the brands that recycle, and reuse waste should be supported more by the people.

As you can see from this chart, most people are in favor of recycling brands, but they can't give an example of a clear environmental brand, which is the biggest problem facing the environmental protection industry now, there should be a pioneer of environmental protection brands to lead the public to start to have environmental awareness and actually do environmental protection and other behaviors

According to 346 responses, 44.2% of people voted for 5, which means they consider ocean waste to be an essential key element in the circular economy. Moreover, 31.2% of respondents voted 4, considering that ocean waste is an important key element. From the survey data, we can conclude that more than 90 percent of people have a strong understanding of the concept of circular economy, which means people are actively involved and participate in circular economy, leading circular economy to become a future trend. Deya company, being a pioneer of circular economy about Maine pollutants, has been essential in bringing attention to the issue of ocean waste and encouraging action of the circular economy. Deya has demonstrated the concepts of circularity and sustainability by reusing marine contaminants to make eco-friendly items like their eco-friendly backpacks.
