Reappearance of Tradition:
Atayal Weaving Wisdom

<About Us>

Competing in CyberFair requires patience, strong English skills, and outstanding collaboration, all of which our team possesses. The entire study and comprehensive work process took a long time, but it was well worth it to finish all of the work that needed to be done. We have come to accept the challenge of competing in the 2022 International CyberFair.

Mia: For the first time joining and participating in the international cyber fair competition, I have gained a lot of new experiences and skills. Above all, to lead a team, organizing and assignment skills are essential. Also, for better work and efficiency, cooperating with teammates is important, with the skill of solving problems between each other. Preparations are significant, especially for the interview. Without the help of teachers, contacting the interviewee needed to be done by ourselves, which was a challenge for me.  These include calls, time appointments, and interview questions, but some mistakes and accidents are still inevitable. After solving all of them, we were finally ready for the interview. During the conversation with Yuma Taru, I was surprised by her determination and influenced by her words. She allows me to see the world with a new light, and the beauty of all kinds of indigenous traditions that we've Tara noticed before.

Mitty: Through participating in this year’s International Cyber Fair Competition, I have learned a lot. Since this project requires plenty of discussion and cooperation with teammates, I have well-developed my communication skills. In this project, we hope to bring the Atayal tradition back and introduce them to the public. This might be hard, but I always try my best to contribute to the team. I feel honored to be in this team, working and improving together through the process of the competition preparation.

Emma: This year our team is participating in the International CyberFair Competition as students from Kang Chiao. From setting up a topic, researching all about that topic, and finally organizing and making the blog better cost a lot of time for us, and in between, we’ve all written down deep memories. For example, we drove a long way to Miaoli to interview Tuma Taru, to get closer to Atayal’s life, and Yuma’s actual expressions and feelings throughout her weaving and cultural life. This is a big and new step for us because most things need to be done by ourselves, nothing is easy the first time. The hardest part was contacting the interviewer, Tuma Taru. We needed to call and email her a few times a week to confirm our schedule. The trip to Miaoli was interesting and I’ve learned a lot more about Atayal’s culture growth and Yuma’s life, and how she managed to change her unusual fate of indigenous.

Zachary: Joining and participating in the cyber fair for the first time, turned out to be surprisingly amazing. Here's what we did: we planned and set a topic, researched the topic in-depth, and lastly, organized and made the site. These times build a deep memory inside me, the most memorable thing that has happened in the journey was the interview, we traveled a long way to Miaoli and interview Yuma Taru, the trip was fun, and we get to look in-depth at Tayal’s life and the weaving culture and the cultural life. For me this is an important and unforgettable experience, and it was meaningful and opened a whole new world of knowledge for me.

Ethan: When I was in elementary school, I really wanted to try CyberFair. But because of the orchestra, I couldn’t try it. When I get into middle school, I can finally try it. We do a lot of research and things for our project. I learned a lot from the research. One time we drove a very long way to Miaoli and visited Yuma-Taru to learn about Atayal's weaving history and why she started protecting the weaving culture. I know a lot about Yuma-Taru and about the weaving culture on this trip, and this trip shows us the weaving they did and how they did it. This is my first time doing the CyberFair, I think this is not easy for us to do all of the research and the website. I think we do a good job but we still need to improve some parts. There were some parts that were difficult for us like contact with Yuma-Taru, but we still finished our project. This is a very important project to me.

Alvin: Cyberfair was particularly fun to join as a club, we did a lot of research, especially a lot of calls, simply to arrange a time to interview with Yuma Taru. Also, our survey has gained a bunch of responses, which was fantastic for our research! The interview was a lot of fun; in fact, it was incredible. We drove around 81.56 kilometers to Miaoli to interview Yuma Taru, who teaches traditional weaving in Taiwan. She was really kind and eager to answer all of our questions. Her aunt also showcased some of the machines that produce these magnificent pieces of woven art, as well as some of the artworks that are displayed at Taoyuan Airport, Taiwan's largest airport. Finally, the interview was fantastic, and we learned a lot about Yuma Taru's life and her thoughts about protection and revival.

Jerald: While participating in the international CyberFair, I have gained a lot of skills and gained a lot of experience. Some important skills I learn are doing work without help from teachers and being better at participating. Although I did not participate in the interview, I still enjoyed contributing to CyberFair. I can still imagine the fun interview of people in my group and Yuma Taru. As the website creator, I was able to learn what style others like. I would still need to improve to not do everything at the last minute and to understand how to collect data and analyze it better. But I still enjoy participation in CyberFair and personally, I think I contributed a lot and did well.
