Recognizing the Problem of Environmental Pollution

Before our research, we noticed that at least 14 million tons of plastic waste were thrown into the ocean every year. 80% of all marine waste, including sediments from deep ocean regions are made of plastic. In addition, plastic waste can’t dissolute naturally, which will stay or float in the ocean for roughly hundreds of years. During these years, it could continuously pollute the ocean and increase the risk of animals getting entangled. Furthermore, environmental conservation activities are more popular in recent years, through pictures and news on the media about sea creatures suffering from pollution, we become aware of the significance and seriousness of this issue. The large number of plastic waste in the ocean urges us to research more about solving the environment.

The Problem with Overusing Fossil Fuels

Petrochemical and Fossil Fuel industries manufacture various chemicals from petroleum or natural gas. Since the raw materials in the petrochemical industry have various types, these materials may become emission of pollution when there are slight negligence in the process, equipment, pipeline transportation, storage, and transportation processes. Most importantly, these chemicals include carcinogenic and mutagenic substances which can be harmful to human health. For example, digestive organs expose to low concentrations of organic solvents for a long time can cause chronic poisoning. Thus, Petrochemical industries can cause air pollution to the environment and even harm human health seriously.

The Cause of Ocean Waste

The introduction of materials or energy into the marine environment by people, whether directly or indirectly, is referred to as marine pollution. Most marine pollution is caused by humans, including nonpoint source pollution, deliberate discharge, oil spill, etc. First, nonpoint source pollution comes from random locations, the source of nonpoint pollution includes farms, vehicles, livestock ranches, discarded trash, etc. Ocean pollution occurs when runoff from rainfall, wind, and snow melt bringing wastes from land to the ocean. On the other hand,  deliberate discharge, oil or chemical spill belongs to point source pollution. Factories release waste with toxic chemicals in rivers thereby polluting the ocean. The failure of oil machinery or other mistakes, oil spillage on marine areas occurs. Hence, these chemicals and resources are the main causes of ocean waste that had led to severe pollution nowadays.

The Negative Impacts of Waste on the Ocean

As stated before, when humans release substances or energy directly or indirectly into the marine environment, it's called marine pollution. Trash can pass through and accumulate on the world's rivers and oceans, which harms living resources, poses health risks to humans, obstructs maritime activities like fishing, degrades the quality of the seawater, and reduces biodiversity. Moreover, there are about 14 million tons of plastic thrown into the ocean every year. Plastic, such as plastic bottles or bags, can harm or kill animals when they are ingested or become entangled. In addition, plastic needs roughly 20 to 500 years to decompose by nature which could destroy our environment and these animals’ habitats. Hence, plastic and trash have led to severe impacts on our Earth and accelerated climate change, if immediate actions are not taken, Earth is in grave danger.
