The Positive Effects of Circular Economy on Taiwan’s Environment

Circular economies have several positive environmental effects in Taiwan. First, it decreases the amount of waste output which can improve the environmental conditions of organisms. The excessive amount of waste in nature has caused extensive environmental pollution. Therefore, circular economies can alleviate this problem. For example, previously plastics can’t dissolve naturally but now plastics can be recycled for new purposes instead. This new method decreases the amount of waste in nature, reducing environmental damage. Second, it can decrease raw material dependence, since circular economies use old materials to produce new products. Continuous circulation of raw materials and waste in the industrial chain. Daily we use too many raw materials to exploit the new product. Taiwan starts a circular economy to save raw materials. After all, circular economies can help waste turn into valuable products and resources making the environment sufficient and more likely to be sustainable.

The Support of Taiwanese Government on Circular Economy

President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen(since 2016) once said "We will strictly control all kinds of pollution, and let Taiwan enter the era of circular economy, converting waste into renewable resources. For the choice of energy, we will gradually adjust it with the concept of sustainability." This quote demonstrates the support from the Taiwanese government for developing a circular economy and their determination to achieve it in Taiwan. The Executive Yuan council in Taiwan passed the “Circular Economy Promotion Plan'' on December 20, 2018. This plan will gradually solve several severe issues in Taiwan, such as but not limited to, resource scarcity, huge energy consumption, outdated technology, high cost, investment stagnation, etc. It includes two main parts, circular industrialization, and industrial circulation. Moreover, these two parts include four major goals, promoting new material investment and research, green consumerism, energy resource integration, industrial symbiosis, and constructing a new circular demonstration park. For example, making the byproduct from A factory to B factory’s raw material to avoid the waste of resources. By the way, green consumerism means encouraging consumers to prioritize eco-friendly products. Through this plan, the Taiwanese government wishes to create a cycle from manufacturing and consumption to resource recovery and reuse which can reveal their determination to establish a circular economy in Taiwan.

The Support of Taiwanese Non-Governmental Organizations on Circular Economy

The Taiwanese government provides related competitions and gives out awards to the companies that they support. Along with the awards, the government provides funds to further support the brands, helping them further develop their technology and products. The awards give consumers insight into the companies’ products, increasing their trust and willingness to purchase the products. Furthermore, these awards give consumers more confidence in choosing the company's sustainable products, and those competition bonuses provided by the government will provide the company with the motivation to move forward. These competitors can see their own strengths and weaknesses, to improve themselves to become a better company and better achieve a circular economy. The Taiwanese government will see a company to be worth paying attention to and they possibly change society, therefore the government will naturally provide some support and help. Allowing companies to better demonstrate their capabilities.
