According to an essay published by UNESCO, interdisciplinary education is vital because most academic knowledge does not require specific disciplines. Instead, learning does not only include a topic or category, which the researchers admitted everyone should be taught. Our school, Kang Chiao, focuses on learning across various disciplines. Therefore, the school often assimilates different ways of learning into our daily learning and activities. Our teammates contributing to this CyberFair project are all in the eighth grade, and we’ve participated in the below interdisciplinary learning together. The main purpose of these activities is mostly for us to understand how to collaborate with others, including clan mates or even unfamiliar “teammates”.
Every year at the end of October, the 8th graders from Kang Chiao embark on a 4-day trip to Mt. Hehuan. On this trip, we climbed 5 of the Hehuanshan peaks. During the hike, we had to help and support our own teammates. Also, we needed the strength and endurance to succeed on a continuous hike. Most importantly, we needed background knowledge of the strategies to use the equipment and the ability to observe the surroundings when getting lost. Overall, hiking requires various types of physical and knowledge skills and empathy to support one another.
The Three Kingdoms Camping is a two-day camping trip for the seventh grade based on the historical Chinese novel ”Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” During this camp, we need to collaborate together with other classes in our kingdoms. We had to discuss the strategies of getting more “troops” coins, and also the ways we could surpass other kingdoms. Meanwhile, we were taught to build a tent and cook by ourselves using simple tools. The teacher taught us how to calculate distance using our body parts or elements from the environment. On the second day, the activity of fighting for the cities requires our knowledge of every subject. Every teacher from various subjects would give out questions related, and students would need to compete with the other students who are keeping safe in their cities. The two-day activity did not only need the skills of scouting but also the ways to communicate well and work with someone unfamiliar in a different environment.
Our school has a club for the International CyberFair. In this club, the ten students have to contribute to the final project of our own research. During the process of completing a study project, we have to contact each other to keep ourselves working on a task. Individually, we have learned writing skills and paraphrasing large amounts of information. When we were preparing to start the project, we spent a long period of time searching for the topic. Meanwhile, we also study about making a website on the internet and how we could make it look more organized. It’s the most challenging part and we have spent a lot of time trying to find out how the program works. Although the progress of International CyberFair is challenging, we believe ourselves to have learned various kinds of skills and ways to solve problems in just a year.
