Questionnaire Results

Out of the 209 surveys we collected, about 3/4 people believe that having specialties or talents could help when applying to university. For the universities, there're a lot of students that have extremely good academic scores, therefore, the universities mostly look for students that have talents or unique specialties first. Since a student that has good scores unnecessary would have a great achievement or give back to society after they graduate; however, student with specialties (which indicates they've tried hard and not giving up on the particular field) or has great personalities, have a great chance to become leaders of each field after being further trained. Following are the scores, about 70% of people believe that having good looking grades could give a great advantage when applicating university. And yet universities do take into consideration each individual's scores while filtering the students since it's hard for teachers to manage the class when students' level varies too much. Other factors such as team working, personal achievement and teamwork all have a result in around 60 percent.

Furthermore, we analyzed the source of our data, most of the people aged below 25 years old believe that personal advantage (such as specialties) is helpful when the applicating university, which is contradicting to people aged above 30 years old's answer, most of them believe that scores are the most important. Thus, we can conclude two points, public belief is changing and yet western education atmosphere has affected Asia. As the quote states, "the youth is the nation's future," we believe that under everyone's hard work, the public attitude toward education in Taiwan could become more open and varied.

Every sport event has its fan, out of these main sports events, ball sports are most popular while animal racing is less popular. The cause of this situation could be the following; ball sports have been introduced to Taiwan society for a longer time, therefore, they are more well known. Furthermore, ball sports require less fee and environment requirements, most age groups could attend. Sports like animal racing are less popular because it has no representing representative figure, lack of promotion, hard to participate or not part of the education curriculum.

The result of this question is different from what our group predicts; non-professional competition still obtains around 50% of the audience. Reasons could be the following; professional competition usually has particular broadcast time, therefore, when those big competitions aren't on the television, people will choose to watch those non-professional competitions. Furthermore, the people that participate in this survey are mostly student, therefore, they might also participate in those non-pro. competition or has friends play in it. This could explain why many students follow non-pro. competition( small league). Different from traditional media such as newspapers or broadcasts, most people follow sport events online, using internet platforms or television. Time has changed, things are turning networked. For example, ChoXue uses technology techniques, turning players' information and records to the cloud system, which reduces the amount of paper waste and data preserving problems. We believe this kind of sports team managing method and broadcasting would become a trend in the near future.

Most of the audience that responded to this survey are Asian, the result demonstrate the traditional Asian culture. 70% of people suggest that a successful student needs to “meet parents expect” and 45% think he or she must have“good grades” The result exposed the fact that most Asain parents focuses on student academic grades, and yet the students believe that reaching parent’s expectation is the sign of success. This also shows the part Taiwan’s education is missing, the variety of individuals. Without variety, when students graduate, they have no specialties nor personal features. And when students have no personal motivation, the reason they try hard is to show and reach parent’s requirements, students often receive too much pressure and eventually get mental illness such as depression. In John Tung Foundation’s survey, 1 out of 4 Taiwan’s junior and senior high school students have depression. According to WHO, about 7% of teenagers aged between 15 to 17 have serious depression. Taiwan's situation is relatively serious compare to all other countries around the world.

Half of the people think that student-athletes (school’s sport team members) only have talent in sport and are bad at academic things. They could only become an athlete or sports coach after they graduate. This shows how deep the stereotype “Good at sport, bad in the brain” is in Asian’s belief. About 60% of people suggest that these students athletes should cultivate a second talent, so their future could have more choices other than sports. Furthermore, most of these student-athletes focus on sports training only, which causes their grades to drop (disadvantage when applying to schools) . About 55% of people suggest these student athlete’s education and job opportunities should have a guarantee. About 45% of the people suggest that these student-athletes’ retirement life should be ensured for two purposes. One is to prevent them to have no other way to make a living after they’re injured or retired. Second, is for them to concentrate on training and competition without worries.

There’s only ⅓ of the population that constantly follows educational and sports organizations. Most people follow these organizations sometimes. We believe it due to the fact that educational organizations’ information are mostly academic, which people might feel boring. On the other hand, most people follow particular sports events instead of organizations. Most people follow sometime due to sometimes having big competitions or trends. This showed that Taiwan’s sport system isn’t mature yet, most people are just following the trend.

More than half of the people turn out not to know ChouXue organization since it’s founded no longer than 4 years and didn’t promote it actively. However, after watching ChouXue’s official video, more than half of the people are willing to know more about this organization. This shows how the public accepts and supports their belief. For those that suggest having no will in knowing more about this organization believe that this kind of platform has nothing related to their daily life. About 70% of the people believe Choxue could help promote the “sport playing” atmosphere in Taiwan society also turns Taiwan’s sports training system more developed and mature. Further want to take steps to support this organization in ways such as watching their live video, sharing their information, becoming a volunteer of the organization...etc.
