Identifying the Problem of Environmental Pollution
We realized the discarded fishing nets are a significant factor for ocean pollution. In 2020, based on the Ocean Conservation Administration data, it shows that 90% of 41 metric tons of waste are discarded fishing nets. Additionally, they provided data that each year there were 136,000 seals, sea lions, and whales impacted by fishing nets. When the fishing nets sink into the sea, it causes the marine organisms to become entangled, unable to break through the fishing net, leading to death or stranding. The Ocean Conservancy stated that 45% of marine organisms are trapped in discarded fishing nets. Furthermore, when the discarded fishing nets cover the coral reef it can cause coral bleaching, which leads to the loss of marine animal habitats. The fishing nets are made of plastic particles; it needs to take 600 years to decompose naturally. Thus, it can continuously impact marine ecosystems. Therefore, we want to investigate how to reuse the discarded finish nets to keep the ocean clean. We hope this website can help everyone to understand the importance of marine conservation.
